Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) celebrated the International Women in Engineering Day (INWED), which is observed on 23rd of June every year. This is in recognition of the role of its female engineers in supporting DEWA’s excellence and leadership. On this occasion, DEWA Women’s Committee organised a virtual seminar for its Emirati female engineers across different divisions to highlight their role in helping DEWA enhance its position as one of the best utilities worldwide. The Committee also launched “#your day… as an engineer” which focuses on the daily responsibilities of female engineers, how they overcome challenges and benefit from opportunities. It also focused on DEWA’s strategies to develop their professional and personal skills in addition to consolidating their qualitative achievements.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, highlighted the efforts of DEWA’s Emirati women engineers who possess knowledge and noble values instilled by the late Founding Father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. These remarkable women prove their competency and capability to preserve the gains and participate effectively in building the nation, in addition to bringing up a generation that will carry on the journey of leadership and excellence, regionally and globally.
“On behalf of DEWA, I would like to congratulate all Emirati women engineers who have become a regional and global role model, giving vivid examples of national action. This has contributed to the UAE entering the fields of space and nuclear power for peaceful purposes. On the ‘Year of the Fiftieth,’ all society members collaborate to support the wise leadership’s vision for the next 50 years and the UAE Centennial to make the UAE the world’s leading nation. In accordance with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, we are committed to increasing the engagement of women in productive and operational sectors. We also engage them in decision making to increase their participation in anticipating and shaping the future. DEWA is one of the most attractive utilities for women. We support their representation in the energy and innovation sectors. DEWA plays a pivotal role in empowering women by providing a motivating work environment that positively impacts DEWA and society. DEWA currently has 1,949 women in its workforce, 80.5% of them are Emirati. This includes 671 female engineers and technicians at DEWA, while 266 women hold managerial positions. 32% of employees at the R&D are Emirati female employees, with most of them highly educated in scientific and engineering areas,” said Al Tayer.
“Since its launch at the beginning of 2010, DEWA Women’s Committee has adopted an integrated approach to explore different areas of interest for women such as self-development, mental and professional development. The Committee translates those interests to plans and programmes that help them balance between their social and professional lives. This also develops their personal skills to deal with challenges and rapid changes. The top management of DEWA supports the Committee to continue its work and harness the potential of women employees to achieve success and excellence. This enhances their effective participation in developing the nation in many areas,” said Fatima Al Jokar, Chairperson of DEWA’s Women Committee.
Maryam Khansaheb, a member of the Women’s Committee, said during the seminar that celebrating INWED is gaining new momentum to motivate women engineers at DEWA to achieve more success and continue their effective support to DEWA’s journey towards sustainable development.
