Dubai to transform tunnels into artistic spaces
Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), in collaboration with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), has launched an open call to transform more than 40 tunnels across the emirate into artistic spaces through original works that speak to Dubai’s character and bring culture into everyday life. The initiative comes as part of the Authority’s Public Art Strategy.
Entries will be accepted from Emirati and UAE-based artists, designers, and architects between 11 May and 15 June 2026. A panel of specialist curators will review each proposal and shortlist those that stand out for creativity, connection to Dubai’s identity, feasibility, and long-term sustainability.
Participants should put forward ideas suited to tunnel environments, with careful consideration of colour, while avoiding text or visual elements that may distract drivers. Designs should prioritise simple compositions and materials built to withstand high temperatures and weather fluctuations. Ceramic tile systems are preferred for their durability and ease of maintenance.
Each entry must include a detailed concept setting out the vision and objectives, along with presentation boards illustrating the proposed design and a defined colour palette. A comprehensive implementation plan addressing safety and security standards for both the public and the artwork is also required. Submitted work must be original, newly created and not previously exhibited or produced, and the artist or team should be able to demonstrate strong experience in delivering public art projects.
