Brand Dubai and DEWA announce the completion of fifth edition of Dubai Street Museum

Brand Dubai, the creative arm of the Government of Dubai Media Office (GDMO), and the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) today announced the completion of the fifth edition of the Dubai Street Museum. As part of the project, local and international artists have painted murals inspired by the themes of ambition, happiness and the future on the walls of DEWA sub-stations


The Dubai Street Museum, launched by Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in 2016, seeks to highlight Dubai’s unique identity, values and aspirations by creating distinctive public artworks across the emirate.   


Unveiled to coincide with the 48th UAE National Day Celebrations, the fifth edition of Dubai Street Museum features murals stretching across three DEWA sub-stations on Al Sa’ada Street, also known as Happiness Street. The project represents the first phase of an agreement signed between Brand Dubai and DEWA to undertake initiatives to enrich Dubai’s cultural and urban landscape.


Khawla Al Mehairi, Executive Vice President of Strategy and Government Communications at DEWA, said: “We are pleased to partner with Brand Dubai, the creative arm of the Government of Dubai Media Office, to achieve the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to convert Dubai into an open museum and show its character as one of the world’s fastest growing and culturally diverse cities. The project supports our shared vision to underline the role of arts in promoting happiness by turning the walls of DEWA’s sub-stations into murals painted by prominent local and international artists. These murals express Dubai’s modernity and its status as a hub for creativity. They also reflect the artistic and cultural diversity of the Emirate as well as its culture, values, and unique identity as a city that brings together various nationalities and cultures. The creative murals also highlight the values of the Emirati society and the ambitions of its people. We are glad that DEWA’s facilities are used to add aesthetic elements that promote the artistic scene of the city. This important project marks the beginning of further cooperation with Brand Dubai to achieve our common objective of highlighting the creative aspects of Dubai and the UAE.”

Fatma Miran, Manager of Corporate Brand at DEWA, commended the locations to implement the artistic project due to the high visibility they offer. “These artworks will attract thousands of visitors and people working in these areas, enhancing their value and impact, as these locations are key business areas in Dubai, in addition to hosting important tourist attractions, most notably the Dubai Future Museum,” said Miran.


Nehal Badri, Director of Brand Dubai, said the initiative supports the common objective of Brand Dubai and DEWA to launch projects that promote creativity and innovation in the community. “The project was designed to introduce a new artistic energy to the area surrounding DEWA’s substations on Al Sa’ada Street, which is home to many iconic landmarks. The murals on the sub-stations highlight Dubai’s spirit and vision,” she said.


“By working with local and international artists, we aim to project Dubai’s identity as a global city at the forefront of shaping the world’s future and its rising profile a hub for talent and innovation. Brand Dubai’s projects also seek to humanise Dubai’s built environment and add unique artistic elements to the city’s communities. Such projects are part of our efforts to realise the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed to transform Dubai into an open-air museum, enhance people’s happiness and promote aesthetic excellence,” Badri added.


Badri further said that the project is designed to enhance the way both residents and visitors relate to their urban environment. “The project aims to enrich the experience of the locality for both residents and visitors by providing them opportunities to closely engage with art and creativity,” she said.


Shaima Al Suwaidi, City Branding Manager at Brand Dubai, said that the project features murals created by Leon Keer, a world-leading anamorphic street artist; Croatian portrait artist Lonac; and Emirati artist Saggaf Al Hashmi.


“In one of the murals created by Lonac, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid is shown celebrating victory in a horse racing championship. Displayed on a wall located next to the Zabeel Stables, the mural also features a calligraphic rendition of a verse from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed’s poem about his love for horses, created by Emirati calligrapher Mohammed Hussain Al Tamimi,” she said.


“In another mural touching on themes of ambition and happiness, Emirati artist Saggaf Al Hashmi’s depicts the UAE’s first Emirati Astronaut floating in space next to an image of children raising the UAE flag. Dutch artist Leon Keer’s 3D mural of solar-powered panels activating a robot illustrates Dubai’s vision for the future and its efforts to promote sustainability,” she added.


Al Suwaidi thanked the artists for contributing their creative works to the fifth edition of the Dubai Street Museum project.


Previous Editions

The first phase of the Dubai Street Museum project, titled the ‘2nd of December Street’ project, featured 16 murals on themes drawn from the UAE’s history and rich heritage, painted by mural and graffiti artists from across the world. The second phase of the project saw one of the largest murals in the world created on the Hatta dam. The 80 x 30 metre artwork portrays the founding fathers of the UAE, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum.


As part of the Dubai Metro Murals Project, the third phase of the Dubai Street Museum, two international artists painted murals on pillars of the Dubai Metro on Sheikh Zayed Road between the Dubai International Financial Centre and Emirates Towers stations. The themes of the murals were chosen to inspire creativity and spread happiness. The fourth phase of the Dubai Street Museum saw the creation of 30 art projects in 30 locations along Jumeirah Road in partnership with 30 Emirati, Arab and international artists. The artworks depicted how Jumeirah connects Dubai’s present and past and highlighted both its futuristic spirit and rich heritage.
